Before all, when the player were just a beginner in Palmont City, there was some teams trying to dominate Palmont City, and for some reason, Kenji, the boss of Samurai Crew, called you to be part of his team. The player agreed, and so, dominated all Palmont City with the team of Kenji. In the meantime you know Nikki and she becomes your girlfriend.
The Samurai Crew, with Kenji, and the player began trying to dominate Mystery City (part of San Juan), where Darius was the boss there. So before the race against Darius, you discover something you do not like about the Samurai Crew, turns against them and destroy this team. Kenji back to Palmont City and makes a new team, Bushido.
Even so, you race against Darius and get his blue Supra. And after that (sometime later), the player heard that there will have a "big" race in Palmont City, bringing together the best 4 pilots in the region (maybe some cities, like Rockport, Bayview, Olympic, I do not know, lol), and The player want to join. (maybe the player has heard that Cross now turned in a bounty hunter and was going to MC - can be it, or not, I do not know, lol).
While you was leaving from MC via Lookout Point, the player has an unexpected encounter with Cross, and the rest you already know.
